|Message from the 2020 APPA President, Dr. Deborah Hasin
The APPA 2020 conference, “Substance Use, Substance Use Disorders: Changing Concepts, Changing Patters” is now one week away! Come to New York City for the cutting-edge scientific talks, and an opportunity to enjoy the city. The conference will provide many opportunities for lively discussions with other participants and with the conference speakers. Also, due to unprecedented interest of talented junior scientists, we will have two poster sessions this year. The first will be on Thursday, March 5, 2020 from 6:00 to 7:30, and the second on Friday, March 6, 2020 from 8:00 to 9:30. Refreshments will be available at these poster sessions. We look forward to seeing you there!
APPA first met in 1910. Its purpose, according to its charter, was “to promote the study of the scientific problems of abnormal psychology” (https://www.appassn.org/founding-of-appa). For 109 years, pioneers in the fields of psychiatry, psychology, and other disciplines related to the problems of psychopathology met yearly to discuss the etiology, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders. Proceedings of many past APPA meetings, including transcripts of their lively debates, are available (https://www.appassn.org/publications).
2020 marks our 110th meeting, and we are pleased to offer a preview of those who will attend. We have nearly doubled the registrations that we had for our 2019 meeting. Nearly half of these are first-time attendees. Many will be participating in our mentorship program and other activities for early career scientists (https://www.appassn.org/february-2020-newsletter). APPA also proudly welcomes back many of its longstanding senior members: our members in attendance in 2020 have a cumulative 1,022 membership-years between them, including 25 attendees who joined APPA more than 20 years ago. We invite all of this year’s attendees – whether it is your first APPA, or for one longstanding member, your 47th – to make the most of this year’s exciting meeting on substance use and substance use disorders.
APPA welcomes all attendees to come to our annual business meeting and participate. The meeting will be at 12:25 on Friday, March 6, 2020. We will discuss the steps we took over the past year to strengthen and grow our Association, and seek your ideas for additional ways to do this. As we look ahead to the next decade and beyond, continuing to strengthen our scientific leadership and enhance the value of APPA membership will be our central concerns (https://www.appassn.org/january-2020-newsletter). We will also welcome the incoming members of APPA Council: Dost Öngür (Vice-President), John M. de Figueiredo (Treasurer-Elect), and Nehal Vadhan (Councilor). We hope to see you at the business meeting and discuss these issues with you!
